Save the Iran Deal

Last week Trump announced he was decertifying the deal that successfully halted Iran’s nuclear program, which means he is claiming (baselessly) that Iran is out of compliance. This opens up a 60-day window in which congress can either 1) re-impose sanctions against Iran 2) attempt to amend the deal or 3) do nothing.

The first and the second options are plain reckless. They will most likely lead to the collapse of the deal, and give Trump an excuse to take us to war. The world already does not trust the Trump administration to keep its word on ANY treaty now, much less renegotiate this one. Our allies who signed the Iran deal have said they will not go along with renegotiation, and any new sanctions will leave us in violation of our own deal.

The best and only option is #3 – do nothing. Call our representatives and ask them NOT to impose new sanctions or amend the deal in any way.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC 202.225.3106; Seattle 206.674.0040

SCRIPT (for Murray and Cantwell): “Hi, my name is [NAME], from [CITY]. Please do not vote for any new sanctions on Iran or attempt to amend the Iran deal in any way in response to Trump’s decertification. The other signatories have made it clear we are either in the deal or we are out, and I consider a vote for amendments or sanctions a vote for war with Iran.”

SCRIPT (for Jayapal and Smith): Hi, my name is [NAME], from [CITY]. Thank you for your statement opposing the decertification of the Iran deal. Please do not vote for any new sanctions on Iran or attempt to amend the deal in any way, and do everything you can to preserve it."
