Action 1: Refuse Trump’s unreasonable budget demands!

This is a big week. Republicans in congress are scrambling to avoid a government shutdown on Friday, which also happens to be Trump’s 100th day in office. As of Tuesday, Republicans have conceded funding for Trump’s border wall (enjoy that victory for a second)!  However, they are still insisting on an increase in military spending.  They are also threatening to drop subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, which could potentially destabilize our health care system. Neither is acceptable. Choose which of these demands you feel most passionate about opposing, and call your representatives to let them know!

Script against military spending:

“My name is [name], and I’m calling from [city, zip].  I am strongly opposed to increasing military spending, especially at a time when so many crucial domestic programs are being slashed. I would like for [MoC] to refuse any budget deal that includes an increase in military spending.”

Script against dropping ACA subsidies:

“My name is [name], and I’m calling from [city, zip] because I am disgusted that Republicans are using the Affordable Care Act as a bargaining chip in budget negotiations. The ACA is important to me because [insert personal reason or story here]. I would like for [MoC] to refuse any budget deal that would destabilize the ACA.”

Action 2: Share your stories about social programs

Do you have a story about how social programs have helped you? At yesterday’s rally and Q&A, staffers from Murray and Cantwell’s offices asked to hear those stories from us. Personal stories about the Affordable Care Act played a large role in preventing its repeal, and now our stories can help in the fight to keep other essential programs like school lunch programs, college grants, Meals on Wheels, prescription coverage and cheap prescriptions, EPA protections, and any other social program that has helped you or someone you know.

Email is preferred for longer stories so that all the details are readily available.
