Urgent State Woes and a Federal Win

On the federal level, we got a big win today – the vote on the Senate Trumpcare bill has been postponed until after the July 4th recess. Thank you for fighting with us and with grassroots efforts across the country that got us this far – take a moment to rejoice and recharge, because the fight is not over yet!

On the state level, however, we are on the precipice of losing the fight for fair taxes, with Democrats reportedly almost ready to cave to Republicans' unfair demands to avoid government shutdown. That's why our first action is an urgent call to state legislators to let them know that we want them to resist!

Action 1: Don't cave on fair taxes to fund education.

This is an urgent action. Call your state representatives to let them know that caving to Republican demands is not acceptable.

Find your state legislators (two representatives and one senator): http://app.leg.wa.gov/districtfinder/

Script for Democratic legislators:

“Hi, my name is [Name] and I’m calling from [zip]. I am calling to ask [Legislator] to demand fair, progressive revenue sources to fully fund education, rather than a property tax hike here to fund the rest of the state. Do not reward Republican obstruction with a budget that hurts me and gives Wal-Mart and Boeing a tax break."

Script for Republican legislators:

“Hi, my name is [Name] and I’m calling from [zip]. I am calling to ask [Legislator] to demand fair, progressive revenue sources to fully fund education, rather than a property tax hike here to fund the rest of the state. I do not support the levy swap, and want you to compromise with the Democrats rather than threatening a shutdown.”

Background:

Per the Seattle Times, "If rumors in Olympia are true, the secret budget plan includes none of Democrats’ progressive tax changes."

Action 2: Don't rest on your laurels

Some of us have been focusing our energies elsewhere lately, but a high volume of calls to our own Senators is as crucial as ever. Staffers have said that Senators Murray and Cantwell keep a tally of our calls and use those tallies as evidence of how unpopular Trumpcare is. So let’s give their tally a boost, and show we're as focused as ever on killing Trumpcare, by calling to thank them for fighting the bill and asking them to continue to resist.

Senator Patty Murray:
DC - 202-224-2621
Seattle - 206-553-5545

Senator Maria Cantwell:
DC - 202-224-3441
Seattle - 206-220-6400

Script:

“Hi, my name is [Name] and I’m calling from [zip]. I am calling to thank [MoC] for fighting so hard against the Republican health care bill. I was glad to hear that the vote has been postponed! Now that we have more time, I hope to see [MoC] continuing to focus on doing everything she can to make sure the bill does not pass after the recess.”
