Help solve the worst humanitarian crisis in almost a century, and ballots are due Tuesday

We have two important actions for you today. First, don't forget to vote in the August 1 primary. Second, the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II threatens 20 million souls. Can you help?

Urgent - Make your voice heard, VOTE!

Our primary is on August 1! Your ballot must be dropped into ballot box by 8:00PM or postmarked by August 1 to count. Less than 40% turnout is expected. Your vote will make a huge difference in deciding who will be on our City Council, and who our next Mayor will be. Tonight is your last chance to sit down and do some research before the hectic Tuesday rush. More info:

The "worst humanitarian crisis" in almost a century

The ACA is safe...for now. Meanwhile, more than 20 million people in Africa are at risk of starving in the months to come, in what the U.N. is calling the "worst humanitarian crisis" since World War II. $6 billion dollars are needed to stave off famine in Yemen, Somalia, South Sudan, and Nigeria. Despite this horrific crisis, the State Department's proposed budget for the next fiscal year cuts its funding by 31%. To Congress's credit, they have allocated an additional $990 million in food aid, but this simply isn't enough.

Call your Senators and Representative and ask them to demand that the State Department's budget is restored, and that more emergency food aid is given to these countries.

Call both:

  • Senator Patty Murray: (206) 553-5545
  • Senator Maria Cantwell: (206) 220-6400

Call one:

  • Representative Jayapal: 206-674-0040
  • Representative Smith: (425) 793-5180

Sample Script

"My name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY}. Over 20 million people in four African countries are at risk of dying of starvation, but the State Department is losing funding. Please tell {NAME} that I want to see the State Department's budget restored, and additional food aid added to the budget. Every minute we waste translates into avoidable deaths. Will {NAME} take a stand on this?"

Bonus Action: Make a Donation

You can also help alleviate the crisis directly by donating to the Global Emergency Response Coalition, an alliance of eight relief organizations. Donating even a few dollars will help. Learn more and find the donation page at
