Action: Tell Congress Dreamers and other Immigrants are Welcome Here

Dreamers are young adults who were brought to America as children and raised in this country. As U.S. Senator Schumer stated, Dreamers are “Americans in every way but paperwork.” Despite broad bipartisan support for DACA—the program for Dreamers established by executive order under President Obama-- it is currently under threat of being eliminated. It would be unconscionable to close the doors to young adults who can remember no other home and who are currently working, going to school, contributing to our nation, and fully invested in building our communities and our economy.

There is hope! The U.S. House and Senate have reintroduced the DREAM Act, legislation that has previously enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support. Ask your Senators to co-sponsor S 1615, a bipartisan Senate bill to make DACA rights secure, and call your Representatives to ask that they cosponsor HR 3440, the bipartisan House companion bill.

At the same time, let them know you oppose the New Trump Administration proposal to slash legal immigration by 50%, dividing families, and depriving our economy of productive workers.

SCRIPT: “My name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [ZIP]. I am calling to ask the [Senator or Representative] to cosponsor the reintroduced Dream Act. Nearly 800,000 Dreamers received critical deportation protections and work authorization under the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.  The Trump Administration has refused say whether it will honor DACA status, and these Americans in everything but paperwork are at risk of deportation.

[FOR SENATORS]  Please protect Dreamers by signing on as a cosponsor of S. 1615, and I also urge [NAME] to oppose President’s proposal to cut the number of immigrant visas and green cards in half.”

[FOR REPRESENTATIVES] Please protect Dreamers by signing on as a cosponsor of HR 3440, and I also urge [NAME] to oppose the President’s proposal to cut the number of immigrant visas and green cards in half.”

[Note: Rep Jayapal has issued a strong statement opposing the proposal to halve the number of immigrant visas. Thank her and urge her to keep fighting.]

GOOD NEWS: This week Patty Murray and Lamar Alexander from the HELP committee issued a press release stating that they’ll be holding proper hearings next month “on the actions Congress should take to stabilize and strengthen the individual health insurance market.”
