Swing McCain on TrumpCare

Mitch McConnell says he will bring Cassidy Graham—TrumpCare’s latest incarnation—to the Senate floor next week, and Trump and McConnell are getting close to the 50 votes they need. At this moment every vote matters, so let’s focus today’s calls on flipping a single senator on the fence: Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Action:  Call John McCain

Senator McCain is not giving away his position on Cassidy Graham, but he has stated two concerns: 1) He believes that the Senate healthcare legislation should follow “regular order,” with hearings, a full evaluation by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), and real deliberation. None of that will be possible in the rush to passCassidy Graham by September 30th; 2) He says he wants to be sure the bill will be “good for Arizona.” The bill fails on that count as well, with Arizona losing $11 billion in federal funding by 2026, according to a study released yesterday by Avalere Health. Call McCain and ask him to vote “no” because the bill is both rushed and bad for his state.

Script

“Hello, my name is [name]. Senator McCain has said that he wants healthcare legislation to be enacted through “regular order” and to be good for Arizona. The rushed Cassidy Graham bill is a failure on both counts. Studies show that Arizona will lose billions in federal healthcare spending if it passes. Senator McCain should not support this bill.”

Extra Credit: Keep Connecting Friendly Red-State Voters to Swing Senators

Indivisible National has re-launched its Blue-to-Red call tool to bring this bill down. Today, sign up and use it to call friendly voters in red states with “swing” Senators, and connect them to their Senator's office! Instructions below:

1.  Click here to sign up to make phone calls from the peer-to-peer dialing tool: https://act.indivisibleguide.com/go/5082?t=5&akid=857%2E392560%2EnsgAHw. Once signed in, you can start making calls immediately - and we’ll give you a script to make it as easy as possible!

2.  Next, you’ll call a voter in a key state with a swing Republican Senator. These folks are your friends — they attended the Women’s March, they’re standing up to #DefendDACA, and/or fight for progressive causes.

3.  You ask them to use their power. You’ll ask them to call their senator in opposition to the bill, and to share their own reasons for opposing it.

4.  The tool connects them to their Senator’s office. The call tool will allow you to automatically patch them through to the Senators’ district offices.

We’ve won this fight before – together, we will win it again.
