We all saw images of Disability Rights activists putting their bodies on the line this week to stop TrumpCare. Now they need our help to preserve the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). H.R. 620, the "ADA Education and Reform Act” which guts citizen enforcement of the ADA, is a part of the larger Republican attack on civil rights and regulation. In early September, H.R. 620 passed out of the House Judiciary Committee (where Rep. Jayapal opposed it) and it’s likely to come to the floor for a vote very soon. As the ACLU notes, H.R. 620 “upends a key provision of the ADA by preventing people with disabilities from immediately going to court to enforce their rights and to press for timely removal of the barrier that impedes access. Without this critical enforcement mechanism, compliance under the ADA will suffer and people with disabilities will be denied the access to which they are entitled to under the law.“
Unfortunately, powerful corporate interests have persuaded a number of Democratic House members to co-sponsor this attack on the ADA, so it has a real chance of becoming law. Ask our Representatives to fight this bill on the House floor, and ask our Senators to do all they can to stop it if it gets to the Senate.
Action 1: Ask our Reps to vote “no” on H.R. 620
Representative Jayapal has already opposed this bill in committee. Thank her, and urge her to keep up the fight on the House floor. Urge Representative Smith to join in opposition to the bill.
“Hello, my name is [name], and I’m calling from [ZIP] about H.R. 620 “The ADA Education and Reform Act” [For Jayapal] thank you for opposing this terrible bill in committee. [For both] this bill would gut enforcement of the ADA and seriously erode the civil rights of people with disabilities. Please fight it on the House floor.”
Action 2: Ask our Senators to fight H.R. 620 if it comes to Senate
“Hello, my name is [name], and I’m calling from [ZIP] about H.R. 620, a bill on the House floor called the ‘ADA Education and Reform Act.’ The legislation would gut enforcement of the ADA and seriously erode the civil rights of people with disabilities, by taking away their right to go to court to press demands for timely access to public accommodations. Please commit to opposing it with every means at your disposal when and if it gets to the Senate.”
Extra credit: many of the co-sponsors of this bill are in California. If you have friends and family in California, ask them to call their reps for a no vote too.
The U.S. Navy hospital ship USS Comfort, a converted super tanker with 1,000 beds, 12 operating rooms, a CAT-scan, and radiology capabilities is finally being dispatched to Puerto Rico. This is a promising (belated) start, but more help is urgently needed!
