A new Department of Homeland Security rule, published in the Federal Register, describes including “social media handles and aliases, associated identifiable information and search results” in the department’s immigrant files. It is set to take effect on October 18.
This is outrageous on many levels, but especially in setting the dangerous dangerous precedent of treating naturalized citizens differently from any other American.
Pramila Jayapal, herself a naturalized citizen, has come out strongly against this move by DHS. She needs us to stand with her.
Action 1: Thank Pramila Jayapal for standing up to this dangerous policy change, and let her know we have her back.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal: 206-674-0040
"Hello, my name is [name], and I’m calling from [ZIP]. I share Representative Jayapal's outrage at the DHS rule change allowing searching of the social media accounts of immigrants, and especially naturalized citizens. I am calling to thank her for standing up to this invasion of privacy."
Action 2: Ask Adam Smith and our Senators to stand with Pramilla Jayapal, naturalized citizens, and immigrants.
Rep. Adam Smith: 425-793-5180
Sen. Patty Murray: 202-224-2621/ 206-553-5545
Sen. Maria Cantwell: 202-224-3441/ 206-220-6400
"Hello, my name is [name], and I’m calling from [ZIP]. I saw Representative Jayapal's statement about the DHS rule change allowing searching of the social media accounts of immigrants and naturalized citizens. Please stand with her, and come out against this rule change."
On October 7, please join Seattle Indivisible and Pramila Jayapal for a day of action in Burien. We'll be knocking on doors for progressive candidates. https://www.facebook.com/events/294972207646010
