After the disappointment of Monday’s Congressional vote on the 3-week continuing resolution, let’s remember that there is much we can accomplish in Washington State, especially if we bring more voters to the polls. Thanks to the election of Manka Dhingra  to the state Senate last summer, three important bills to expand voting rights have passed there, and await passage in the state House:

• HB 1800 The Washington Voter Rights Act  addresses the underrepresentation people of color in local government  by facilitating a shift away from unfair “at large” elections.

• HB 2595 (SSB 6353) Automatic Voter Registration would give every eligible citizen in Washington a chance to have their voice heard and their vote counted by mobilizing state government agencies to reach more disenfranchised voters.

• HB 2297 Same Day Voter Registration allows a citizen to register to vote anytime before 8pm on the day of an election.

Tell your two state House representatives to support these common sense ways to expand voting rights and build a progressive majority in Washington State

Action:  Tell State Representatives to Support Voting Rights

Find your two state House Representatives (and save them to your phone if you haven’t already):

Sample Script

“Hello! My name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [ZIP]. I’m calling to ask you to support three important bills to strengthen voting rights in Washington State. All three have passed the state Senate:  The Washington Voter Rights Act (HB 1800), Automatic Voter Registration (HB 2595) and Same Day Voter Registration (SHB 2297). These bills will strengthen our State’s democracy. I urge you to vote for all three.”
