Defend Immigrant Families!

OFFICIAL DAILY ACTION for Thursday, October 11th

Yesterday the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued its long-planned regulation to penalize immigrants and their US-citizen children who use any form of public benefit, from health insurance subsidies to the earned income tax credit used by about one-fifth of taxpayers. The rule, which was crafted by the notoriously xenophobic Stephen Miller, also penalizes immigrants whose US-citizen spouses or children use a public benefit. Under this new rule, immigrants would be disqualified from receiving a green card if they claim almost any benefits or if DHS deems them likely to receive benefits in the future.

If this regulation moves forward, only the wealthiest immigrants could build a future in the United States. This regulation is part of the Trump administration’s ongoing effort to divide the country and vilify immigrants. The proposal could prevent immigrants from using the programs their tax dollars help support, preventing access to healthy, nutritious food and secure housing. Because one in four American children have at least one immigrant parent, this could impact millions. It would make us a sicker, poorer, and hungrier nation.

Action 2: Thank Senator Murray for Speaking Out Against the New “Public Charge” Rule

Leading Senate Democrats, including Senator Murray, have sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen requesting DHS withdraw from the proposal to refuse green cards to immigrants who use common public service benefits. Thank her for taking a stand for immigrant families.

Sample Script

"Hi, my name is {NAME} and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP}. I want to thank Senator Murray for joining with other leading Democratic Senators to demand that Homeland Security withdraw its cruel expansion of the “Public Charge” rule for legal immigrant families. Urge her to keep speaking out against this Administration’s racist immigration policies.”

Action 3: Commit to at Least One Canvass or Phone Bank in the Next Week

Every week between now and the November 6 Election, the Seattle Indivisible Daily Action Team will be posting a targeted list of election events and actions. Changing Congress is he best way to defend immigrant families!

This is the most important election of our lifetimes, and winning will take more than just your vote. Please commit to doing at least one action a week, and as many more as you can.

We are lucky in Washington State to have 3 races that can help flip the house, along with some great progressive initiatives that can keep things moving forward, no matter what happens in the other Washington.
