Oppose Two Alarming DOJ Nominations

While Democrats were overruled in the contentious fight over the Kavanaugh nomination, first in the Senate Judiciary Committee vote on Thursday and then in the full Senate vote over the weekend, we must remember the vote was extremely close (50-48) and along party lines. Just because we were defeated in this vote does not mean we will lie down and allow this administration to destroy our planet’s environment, our civil rights, or our treatment of immigration populations.

ACTION: Say “No” to Climate-Change Denier Jeffrey Bossert Clark and Equal Employment Opportunity Attacker Eric Dreiband

This week two nominations, Jeffrey Bossert Clark for Top Environmenal Prosecutor, and Eric Dreiband for Head of DOJ Civil Rights Division, will be voted on by the full Senate.

- Clark is a lawyer who represented BP in Deepwater Horizon lawsuits in 2011; he has led oil industry challenges to government regulations to protect the environment; he has attacked government agencies that, in the DOJ role, he would be charged with protecting.

- Dreiband’s nomination has condemned by civil rights organizations. Like Clark, he is viewed as someone who would implement Trump’s conservative agenda. As a lawyer defending “high profile discrimination lawsuits” (https://chambers.com/profile/individual/272888), he has fought on the side of employers charged with discrimination against women, mothers, Muslims, the elderly, and people with criminal records.

Both Clark’s and Dreiband’s nominations have been delayed for over a year, and now that Republicans have run roughshod over Democrats and the public’s opposition regarding Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court, they are trying to force these two nominations past us as well.

Today: tell our Senators to say “No, no, and no!” to the confirmation of these two nominations that would continue to dismantle protections for the environment and for civil rights.

  • Sen. Patty Murray: 202-224-2621 / 206-553-5545

  • Sen. Maria Cantwell: 202-224-3441 / 206-220-6400

SCRIPT:

“Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent calling from [CITY, ZIP]. Today I am calling to express my immediate and vehement opposition to the nomination of Jeffrey Bossert Clark for Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division.I am also opposed to Eric Dreiband as the Head of the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. Both of these nominees have attacked the agencies that they would be charged with protecting. We can’t afford this. Thank you for opposing these and other outrageous nominations by the Trump Administration.”

Tuesday 11:45 am - Resist Trump Tuesday Rally

https://www.facebook.com/events/172696546952099/

Our Causes Are Connected And We Need A Choir Of Progressive Voices

At our rally this Tuesday, we will discuss where we go from here in the aftermath of the Kavanaugh confirmation vote. Tae Phoenix will not only share her inspiring music at the rally, but will also speak about her experiences participating in the Kavanaugh confirmation battle in Washington D.C. We will discuss lessons learned and how we translate this energy into meaningful electoral change.

In our continuing work in coalition with Families Belong Together and a number of immigrant rights organizations, we also will welcome a speaker to educate us on the latest effort by the Trump Admin to penalize immigrants for using needed public services under the new “Public Charge” rule.

Efforts to marginalize, exclude and silence women, minorities and immigrants are all interrelated, and recent events only underscore why we all need to continue to stand up for one another and mobilize together to make our voices heard in the midterm elections.

COME JOIN US, WE NEED YOUR VOICE!

Note: We will NOT be having our regularly scheduled meeting with senate staff following our Tuesday rally this week due to unavoidable scheduling conflicts with the staffers, but this regular weekly meeting will resume on Oct. 16th.

Canvass

We are lucky in Washington State to have 3 races that can help flip the house, along with some great progressive initiatives that can keep things moving forward, no matter what happens in the other Washington.

Canvassing is the single most effective way to get out the vote, and persuade people who haven’t yet made up their minds. Please pick a shift that works with your schedule.
