A War Criminal Shouldn't Run the CIA

OFFICIAL DAILY ACTION for THURSDAY, March 15: Block Haspel's CIA Director Appointment

Now that Mike Pompeo is replacing Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State, Trump has nominated Gina Haspel to fill the CIA Director role. Gina Haspel is currently the deputy CIA director. She also ran a secret prison in Thailand where a terrorist suspect was waterboarded 83 times.

A person who presided over brutal torture should not be rewarded with a promotion to one of the most powerful positions in the country. Luckily, she needs to be confirmed by the Senate – and even some Republicans have expressed reservations about appointing a literal war criminal to run the CIA.

That means we need to get ahead of the game and let our Senators know that we expect them to lead the Democrats to make her confirmation hearing count, and vote against her confirmation when the time comes.

Action: Tell Senators to Block Haspel

Script:

“Hi, my name is ____________ and I’m a constituent in [zip code]. I’m calling to voice my opposition to Gina Haspel’s nomination to CIA Director. She ran a prison that committed immoral acts of torture, and should not be rewarded for those heinous acts. Since many Republicans have said they are withholding judgement until her confirmation hearing, I expect [Sen] to lead Senate Democrats in asking hard questions to make it evident that she is not fit for the position. When the time comes for a vote, I hope [Sen] will vote against Haspel’s confirmation.”
