Don’t hand Trump a blank check for war

Official action for Tuesday, June 12

When Congress passed an Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) after September 11, 2001, it opened the door for the president to unilaterally launch wars that are still going on today in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) are working to write a revised AUMF, but the new version has many problems. Most terrifyingly, it reverses the process for war authorization; instead of Congress authorizing the president to declare war, the president can declare war, and Congress must pass a bill to oppose it--a bill that the president can still veto! Tell our representatives not to hand Trump this level of unchecked power. This is a bipartisan bill, so it’s especially important that our representatives know that we do not support it.

Sen. Patty Murray--DC 202-224-2621; Seattle 206-553-5545
Sen. Maria Cantwell--DC 202-224-3441; Seattle 206-220-6400
Rep. Pramila Jayapal--DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040
Rep. Adam Smith--DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

“Hello, I’m [name] from [city, zip]. [Senator/Representative name] must oppose the Corker-Kaine Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) as long as it gives the president power to declare war without Congressional approval.”
