Comment against the abortion gag rule

Official action for Tuesday, June 5

We have our regular Resist Trump Tuesday rally and weekly meeting today. You can find more details at the end of this message. We hope to see you there!

Last month, Trump announced an abortion gag rule. This rule would block Planned Parenthood and other agencies providing abortions from receiving Title X funding. It would also prevent agencies receiving Title X funding from referring for an abortion unless the patient expressly states that she has already decided to terminate her pregnancy. This terrifying bill is finally open for formal comment--let’s flood the Department of Health and Human Services with comments against it!

Comment here:…/compliance-with-statutory…

Example talking points:

  • The rule is designed to remove Title X federal funding from important family planning clinics, like Planned Parenthood. Since Planned Parenthood’s other source of funding is Medicaid, the rule would hit those without health insurance particularly hard. This is especially troubling for the 18 states that still haven’t expanded Medicaid.
  • “A new analysis from the Guttmacher Institute estimates that there are 103 counties in the United States where Planned Parenthood is the only provider of publicly funded contraceptives. In an additional 229 counties, Planned Parenthood serves the majority of women who are low-income and qualify for government help paying for birth control” (Sarah Kliff, Vox). Women around the country, especially those of low-income, are dependent on Planned Parenthood for family planning--the exact healthcare need Title X is supposed to protect!
  • The rule would prevent doctors at other Title X funded organizations from referring their patients to abortion clinics unless the patient initiates the conversation and states that she has already decided to terminate her pregnancy. This jeopardizes women’s lives and destroys patient-doctor trust.
