Wrapped up in the House Democrat’s Rule Package is a statute known as Pay-Go. Pay-Go stipulates than the cost of any new government program must be offset by new government revenue from somewhere else. This seems like a reasonable rule on its face, but it could hamstring our ability to enact the sort of sweeping programs, like medicare-for-all, that won us the House majority in 2018. Rather than try to fit crucial social programs into tiny, impossible budgets while Republicans drive us into debt with tax cuts, we need to be ambitious and think in the long term of how much things like universal health care will save our country in the future.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Khanna have both said they will vote against the Rules Package because of Pay-Go. Ask your House Reps to do the same!
ACTION: Vote No on Pay-Go
Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC - 202-225-3106; Seattle - 206-674-0040
Rep. Adam Smith: DC - 202-225-8901; Renton - 425-793-5180
"Hi, my name is [NAME], calling from [CITY]. I’d like to ask that [Rep] vote no on the House Rules Package as long as it contains Pay-Go. Saying it will be fixed later is not enough. We need sweeping social programs like Medicare for all, which cannot be effectively enacted if they must be squeezed into tiny budgets as Pay-Go would require. Look to the future and the benefits, both economic and social, to investing in such programs – please vote against Pay-Go. Thank you.”
