Stop Stupid Shutdowns

Official Daily Action for Tuesday January 29th, 2019

The 35-day Presidential tantrum--also known as the “partial federal shutdown”--cost the economy $11 billion, upended the lives of 800,000 dedicated public servants and disrupted the essential work they carry out on our behalf. Unfortunately, the President may force another shutdown in less than three weeks if if congress refuses to ransom the federal budget by paying for his $5 billion wall.

It is time to take away the government shutdown as a negotiating tool. Senator Warner (D VA) has introduced S. 104, called The Stop Stupidity (Shutdowns Transferring Unnecessary Pain and Inflicting Damage In The Coming Years) Act, which would automatically renew funding for all aspects of government, except for the legislative branch and president’s office, at the same level as the previous year. Minority Leader Schumer announced his support yesterday.

ACTION: Ask our senators to cosponsor The Stop Stupidity Act, and ask our representatives to introduce companion legislation in the House.

• Sen. Patty Murray: DC 202-224-2621; Seattle 206-553-5545

• Sen. Maria Cantwell: DC 202-224-3441; Seattle 206-220-6400

• Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

• Rep. Adam Smith: DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Suggested Script for Senators:

“Hi. My name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [CITY/ZIP]. The partial government shutdown that ended last week was painful, and costly. While I am grateful that Senator [NAME] refused to fund the ridiculous border wall, I am afraid we could relive the experience in less than three weeks unless something is done. Please ask Senator [NAME] to cosponsor S 104, Senator Warner’s Stop Stupidity Act, to make future shutdowns impossible.”

Suggested Script for Reps

“Hi. My name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [CITY/ZIP]. The partial government shutdown that ended last week was painful, and costly. While I am grateful that Representative [NAME] refused to fund the ridiculous border wall, I am afraid we could relive the experience in less than three weeks unlesssomething is done. Please ask Representative [NAME] to introduce or cosponsor legislation like S 104, Senator Warner’s Stop Stupidity Act, to make future shutdowns impossible.”

BONUS ACTION For Constituents of Rep. Adam Smith (WA-9)

Thank Rep. Smith for his clear commitment to hold his first hearing as House Armed Services Committee Chair on whwat he calls the Administration’s “racist and xenophobic” decision to deploy troops to the border around the midterms: “We want to shine a light on it and make it clear, in my view, that there is no legitimate purpose here. And if there's no legitimate purpose, then why are you wasting the amount of money that you're wasting to put them down there?”

Come hear from people directly impacted by this shutdown, how much pain was caused, and what we expect as we negotiate the new terms. No more hostage taking! Do not use DACA recipients as leverage! Governing by threat of shutdown is NOT governing.

We rally at the Federal Building from 11:45AM-12:30PM, immediately followed by a meeting from 12:30-1:30PM with representatives from the offices of Rep. Adam Smith and Rep. Pramila Jayapal.
