Even as it is besieged by scandal, the Trump Administration is continuing to persecute immigrants. We learned yesterday that the Department of Homeland Security plans to start collecting DNA samples of hundreds of thousands of immigrants in large detention centers, and add them to an FBI database that is normally reserved for serious criminals. They will even force samples from children and legal asylum seekers.
Here is Vera Eidelman, an American Civil Liberties Union lawyer, on the threat to human rights:
"That kind of mass collection alters the purpose of DNA collection from one of criminal investigation basically to population surveillance, which is basically contrary to our basic notions of a free, trusting, autonomous society."
Tell your representatives to condemn this policy and to refuse to fund it in budget and funding negotiations.
