Protest New Restrictions on Transgender Troops

This week the Defense Department announced a new policy that restricts transgender troops from serving openly as a transgender. The new policy is less restrictive than President Trump's proposed ban on transgender people serving in the military. However, the new policy is expected to result in military discharges for transgender troops who are unable or unwilling to serve as their birth-assigned gender.

Why now? Last week the final legal injunction against Trump's proposed transgender ban in the military was reversed. Transgender people will only have 30 days, until April 21, before this policy goes into effect.

Today transgender people can enlist and serve openly in the U.S. military. If this policy goes into effect, in 30 days people who want to defend our country and serve in the U.S. armed forces will not be able to do so if they are openly transgender.

ACTION: Tell lawmakers to continue to defend transgender rights, in the military or elsewhere.

It’s the weekend, but we can still leave our MOCs voicemail that lawmakers’ staff will document when they return to offices on Monday. Be sure to include your name and city/zip in your message so they can identify you when you leave a voicemail message.

“Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am saddened and outraged that the Defense Department is discriminating against transgender troops, and that President Trump is attempting to to ban transgender people from serving in the military. Transgender people should not be prevented from living openly in the military or elsewhere in our society. Please continue to speak out against this injustice, and to work with your Congressional colleagues to support transgender rights. Thank you."
