SB 5339 Repeal the Death Penalty - Last day for WA State bills

Official Daily Action for Wednesday April 17, 2019

SB 5339, which would repeal the death penalty, is out of the House Rules Committee and on the calendar for a vote today. TODAY IS THE LAST DAY OF THE SESSION. Let's make sure it actually gets a vote.

The use of the death penalty in Washington State was ruled unconstitutional on October 11, 2018, by the Washington State Supreme Court. SB 5339, and its companion bill, HB 1488, would abolish the death penalty.

The State Supreme Court found that the death penalty is "racially biased," "arbitrary," and "lacks 'fundamental fairness.' SB 5339 would abolish the death penalty and replace it with life in prison without the possibility of parole.

It’s time to remove Washington State’s broken and unconstitutional death penalty from our statute.
