Oppose Oil Lobbyist David Bernhardt for Interior Secretary

President Trump has nominated David Bernhardt for Secretary of the Interior to replace Ryan Zinke. David Bernhardt is a former oil lobbyist. A Greenpeace statement says in part:

“David Bernhardt heading the Interior Department would be a dream come true for fossil fuel companies, but a nightmare for the American people. If ethical violations alone don’t disqualify him from holding this position, his record of selling out public lands and waters to his industry buddies should” (Janet Redman, Greenpeace USA Climate and Energy Campaign Director, quoted in USA Today, March 28, 2019, link below).

Last week Bernhardt’s nominations was advanced out of committee and a final confirmation vote is expected soon. Ethics questions include why he continued lobbying after he had officially vowed to stop. Like many of President Trump’s choices for top environmental positions, Bernhardt has interests in promoting a fossil fuel agenda and against the protection of the environment.

ACTION: Tell lawmakers you oppose David Bernhardt’s nomination for Secretary of the Interior.

It’s the weekend, but we can still leave our MOCs voicemail for lawmakers’ staff to document when they return to offices on Monday. Be sure to include your name and city/zip in your message so they can identify you when you leave a voicemail message. Or you may prefer to email your MOCs; please customize email messages to convey your own thoughts.

“Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am calling to express my deep concern about President Trump’s nomination of David Bernhardt for Secretary of the Interior. Because of Bernhardt's background as an oil industry lobbyist, I am concerned that he will use his position to promote fossil fuel industry interests. This will result in continued destruction of the environment and will exacerbate the climate change crisis. Please fight against this nomination. Thank you."
