Lower Prescription Drug Prices - Thank Rep. Jayapal, Ask Rep. Smith to Cosponsor

Thanks to Indivisible National for the following action!

Prescription drug prices are substantially higher in the United States than in other high-income countries. This is partially because the government is not allowed to use its position as the largest purchaser of prescription drugs in the country (through Medicare) to bargain for lower prices for patients.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) has introduced the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act (H.R. 1046) to give Medicare the power it needs to effectively negotiate with drug companies and bring drug prices down. This bill is strong because it would allow the government to license competitors to produce any medication as a generic if the company holding the patent refuses to come to the table. An alternative, weaker bill is being discussed that would use arbitration to bring down drug prices, but this is not good enough.

Every representative should co-sponsor H.R. 1046, the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act - Rep. Jayapal already has, but Rep. Smith is currently not a co-sponsor. Call Rep. Jayapal to thank her, and call Rep. Smith to tell him to co-sponsor legislation that will work to bring drug prices down.

ACTION: Co-Sponsor Legislation to Lower Prescription Drug Prices

Rep. Pramila Jayapal--DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

Rep. Adam Smith--DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Script for Rep. Jayapal:

"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm calling from [PLACE] to thank Rep. Jayapal for cosponsoring H.R. 1046, the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act. It is crucial that we bring prescription drug prices down, and I am proud to see my representative's name on a strong bill that could make it happen."

Script for Rep. Smith:

"Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm calling from [PLACE] to ask that Rep. Smith co-sponsor H.R. 1046, the Medicare Negotiation and Competitive Licensing Act. This bill will bring down our obscenely high drug prices while protecting patients’ access to critical medicines. This bill is strong because it would allow the government to license competitors to produce any medication as a generic if the drug company holding the patent refuses to come to the table. I’ve heard that there may be another bill coming that would use arbitration instead, and that isn’t good enough. Please cosponsor H.R. 1046, as Rep. Jayapal has already done, and commit to supporting the strongest bill to lower prescription drug prices instead of weaker, arbitration-based proposals."
