Our Senators chose to stand with Trump.

On Friday, both Senators Murray and Cantwell made a choice to stand with Trump and against our immigrant communities by voting to fund Trump’s inhumane immigration machine.

Here is the short version:

Migrant children are being subjected to horrendous conditions at detention centers across the country. Simply torturing children was not enough for Trump and the GOP who decided to exploit the children further by using them as a political weapon to get more funding for DHS. Trump claimed he could not make the conditions better for the children without more money.

The Progressive Caucus in the House, rightfully, does not trust the Trump administration. They wanted specific language included in the bill to force money to actually get to the children in need. And language to prevent the money being diverted to ICE. They crafted legislation so the funds could only be used for one purpose. To make the conditions better for the children.

However, without the support of the Senate Democrats the House had no leverage to negotiate. The Senate plan was brought to the floor of the House with zero input from the House Democrats and passed with more support coming from the GOP than Democrats.

Just so we’re clear, there are no provisions in this funding bill to ensure conditions for the children improve. Make no mistake. This money will be used to harm immigrant communities.

So to summarize, just a short time after Trump sent a tweet, threatening mass deportation raids that are terrorizing millions of people, our Senators voted to become knowing accomplices.

This vote was unjustifiable. Our Senators knew it. They voted for it anyway.

Of the Washington State Delegation, only Rep. Smith and Rep. Jayapal voted no.

We thank you both!

The other eight House Reps as well as our two Senators are now knowing accomplices to criminal human rights violations.

Are you angry? We Are!

No script today. You don’ t need it.

ACTION: Tell our Senators there is no justification for their DHS funding vote!

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, Rep. Omar, and our own Rep. Jayapal on the bill:

“We didn’t even bother to negotiate, This bill is completely irresponsible to the American people and to those kids on the border.” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

“A vote for Mitch McConnell’s border bill is a vote to keep kids in cages and terrorize immigrant communities.” - Rep. Ilhan Omar

“I am so disappointed that the Senate Democrats put the House in this position w/ no leverage. If you’re hoping that this emergency funding will stop the child abuse happening at the border, I’m sorry to say you’re wrong. There are no provisions in this bill to guarantee that.” - Rep. Pramila Jayapal
