2020 Elections: Safeguard Our Voting Process

It’s been a long haul since the shock and dismay of the 2016 elections. In the interim we have discovered evidence of foreign government interference in our election process. We have seen manipulation of voting maps by Republican-majority state legislatures to favor Republican candidates and to stock the U.S. Congress against progressive and Democratic candidates.

Yet we still won the U.S. House in 2018. In 2020 we will be fighting to win back the U.S. Senate and the Presidency.

It has been a long haul, and it is natural and human to feel discouraged by the seemingly unrelenting bad news that hits us every day. It can feel as though nothing can be done. Yet the only thing we can do is … to keep on. Keep on taking care of ourselves, keep on taking care of family and loved ones, and keep on doing what we know we must do.

For today’s action, we are asking you to help secure our 2020 elections by supporting the Securing America's Federal Elections Act (SAFE Act).

ACTION: Call and leave voicemail, or email, our lawmakers and tell them you support securing U.S. elections with the Securing America's Federal Elections Act (H.R. 2722).

Introduced by Democratic Representative Zoe Lofgren of California, H.R. 2722 mandates non-electronic voting processes in all states, protects the ballot inspection and verification system, and provides support for people with disabilities to vote privately and independently.

This legislation has passed the House, but the Senate has not brought it to a vote. Republican objections in the House included assertions that interference with voting machines has never been proved, and the misleading assumption that voters would have to wait in long lines if given paper-only ballots. Yet as we know, information in the Mueller Report indicates that Russian interests hacked state databases and voting machine companies. And as for paper ballots, twenty-two states, including Washington and Oregon, have provisions for mail-only elections, which entirely eliminates lines at the polling place.

Why are Republicans so afraid of safeguarding U.S. elections? This is yet another insult to American voters, alongside the deplorable actions by Republicans to stack the odds in their favor by gerrymandering voting districts in the states.

From Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s floor speech on H.R. 2722:

“Yeah, we won the election. We won the election because the American people were sick and tired of what the Republicans were putting forth. We won the election in the most gerrymandered, voter-suppressed, political arena you can imagine. Yet, the American people came forward.”

Today we're asking you to leave a message for lawmakers to tell them we support securing U.S. elections with the SAFE Act.

“Hello, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am [CALLING/WRITING] to express my strong support for the Securing America's Federal Elections Act, H.R. 2722. We need to protect our U.S. elections from outside interference.

Please do everything possible to bring H.R. 2722 to the floor for a vote.

Thank you for supporting H.R. 2722 in the House. Please work with your Senate colleagues to pass it in the Senate.

Thank you.”
