Seattle Indivisible is supporting Indivisible National’s Defund Hate Campaign!
Per Indivisible National:
The appropriations process, where Congress decides how much funding agencies will receive for the year—including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) — is underway. The first draft of the appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which was released on June 4, included some key improvements over the status quo; for example, it proposes cutting the number of beds ICE can use to detain people, and taking back the money that Trump stole for his wall when he declared a fake emergency. But the bill isn’t perfect, and Democrats on the Appropriations Committee still need to hold strong to protect these gains and make key improvements.
The Appropriations Committee approved the bill on June 11 after adding amendments to strengthen it (such as a provision defunding of some of Trump's most disgusting executive orders/actions/regulations, like the Muslim Ban). However, some unacceptable provisions did make it into this version of the bill, such as a $387 million slush fund for ICE. Now, the fight will move to the full House, which has to act by September 30 to pass funding bills for the entire government.
The appropriations process is our best chance to act to stop Trump’s deportation machine. If you care about ending Trump’s racist immigration policies — like separating, caging, and tear-gassing families — make a call today and tell your Member of Congress (MoC) to cut funding for ICE and CBP, and get rid of the slush fund that will allow ICE to continue terrorizing immigrant communities.
ACTION: Call your Representative and Senators and ask them to cut ICE and CBP funding in FY20 appropriations bill.
