Demand Senate Action on Gun Violence

In the wake of the past week's horrific mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called on her Senate counterpart, Mitch McConnell, to call the Senate out of its August recess and take action on a gun violence bill that the Democratic-controlled House passed with bipartisan support almost six months ago.

The House's legislation, Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, or H.R. 8 for short, would close loopholes that today allow anyone to buy a gun, regardless of their background, just so long as they buy the gun at a gun show, via the Internet, or from a private dealer. Ninety percent of Americans support universal background checks on gun sales, and the only thing that keeps H.R. 8 from passing the Senate is McConnell's unwillingness to bring it up for a vote.

Today's Action: Tell our Senators we want a vote on background checks

Call both Senators:

  • Senator Patty Murray: DC – 202-224-2621; Seattle – 206-553-5545

  • Senator Maria Cantwell: DC – 202-224-3441; Seattle – 206-220-6400

Sample script:

Hi, my name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP} to ask the Senator to demand that Mitch McConnell brings the Senate back from its August recess to debate and vote on H.R. 8, the bipartisan background checks bill that passed the House earlier this year. Speaker Pelosi has called on McConnell to act on this issue, and I want to see the Senator do the same. ninety percent of Americans support background checks on gun sales, and it's time that we finally close gun sales loopholes.
