On August 27, a group of Democratic and Independent Senators sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan in protest of the Trump administrations heartless, illegal, and counterproductive “Remain in Mexico” policy. This policy ignores international human rights conventions by forcing asylum seekers to return to Mexico, where they are often under threat of violence, to await resolution of their asylum cases. Since migrants often do not have shelter, resources, or access to legal aid with which to make their asylum case, this effectively shuts down the asylum system.
Senator Patty Murray signed on to this letter, but Senator Cantwell did not. Let’s call them both – thank Sen. Murray for being proactive, and ask Sen. Cantwell why she isn’t doing more.
ACTION: Thank Murray for Speaking Out, Ask Cantwell to Do More
Senator Patty Murray: DC - 202-224-2621 Seattle - 206-553-5545
Senator Maria Cantwell: DC - 202-224-3441 Seattle - 206-220-6400
Script for Sen. Murray:
“Hi, my name is [NAME] and I am calling from [PLACE] to thank Sen. Murray for joining other Senators in sending a letter to the Secretary of State formally protesting the inhumane “Remain in Mexico” policy. Thousands of asylum seekers are being put in danger because of this policy, and I was glad to see my Senator’s name in protest of it. Please continue to do everything you can to prevent human rights abuses, including defunding hate by voting against any extra funding for ICE or CBP.”
Script for Sen. Cantwell:
“Hi, my name is [NAME] and I am calling from [PLACE] to express my disappointment with Sen. Cantwell. Sen. Murray and a dozen other senators recently sent a letter to the Secretary of State to formally protest the inhumane “Remain in Mexico” policy, but Sen. Cantwell did not sign on. Why not? Thousands of asylum seekers are being put in danger because of this policy, and I would like to see Sen. Cantwell proactively fighting this injustice. Please do more to fight the Trump administration’s hate-fueled policies, including voting against any extra funding for ICE or CBP in the future.”
