Stand Up for Climate Change with the Climate Action Now Act

In July 2017 President Trump announced plans to formally withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement in 2020. The U.S. dropping out of the agreement would be an irresponsible and deplorable action in the face of so many extreme natural disasters in recent years, including runaway wildfires and unprecedentedly destructive hurricane storms.

We’ve called about this before, but the House has passed H.R.9, the Climate Action Now Act. This bill would require the U.S. to remain in the Paris Accord and to develop a plan for achieving the agreement’s standards for carbon emissions.

Since the 2018 elections when Democrats retook control, the House of Representatives has done amazing work with legislation to reverse the many injustices done under Republican control of Congress and the White House. Unfortunately, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has blocked this bill, and others, from even reaching the Senate floor for a vote. McConnell has stubbornly refused to bring House-passed legislation up for consideration by the full Senate.

In spite of McConnell’s actions, our calls are still critical in conveying the importance of this legislation to our senators. Senators Murray and Cantwell, armed with the numbers of constituents who express support for the legislation, can go to their Senate colleagues and put pressure on McConnell to bring legislation to a Senate vote.

Today we’re asking you to leave a message for our senators in support of H.R.9, the Climate Action Now plan. It’s the weekend, but we can still leave voicemail that will be picked up and recorded by senators’ staff on Monday.

ACTION: Tell your MOCs that the U.S. must stay in the Paris Climate Change Agreement.

  • Senator Maria Cantwell: DC - 202-224-3441 Seattle - 206-220-6400

“Hello, I’m [NAME] from [CITY]. I read that H.R.9, the Climate Action Now Act, has been passed by the House to retain our commitment to protecting our planet from disastrous climate change effects. Please urge your Senate colleagues to pressure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring this to a vote in the Senate. Thank you."

#DefundHate Rally

Come join Seattle Indivisible at our #DefundHate rally. The #DefundHate campaign seeks to pressure Congress during its September appropriations process to defund the agencies and systems being used by the Trump administration to carry out violence against our immigrant community. From caging children, families and adults at the border, to launching raids that rip people away from homes where they’ve lived years or even decades, to attempting to illegally block asylum, it’s clear that the Trump administration has focused its resources on maximizing harm to immigrant communities. Congress must fight the atrocities Trump is committing at the southern border and throughout this country by cutting funding for the agencies being used to carry out these abuses-- Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Defunding ICE and CBP, and implementing safeguards to prevent Trump from stealing funds for these agencies from hurricane relief and other emergency resources, is the best route to blocking the implementation of Trump’s horrifying anti-immigrant agenda. Come Tuesday and learn the best tactics to pressure Congress to #DefundHate.

Immediately following our 11:45 am rally, as we regularly do on Resist Trump Tuesday, we will be meeting with Senator Murray’s and Senator Cantwell’s staff from 12:30-1:30 pm to let them know how we want them to DefundHate, and afterward, for a Q&A session on whatever topic you want to raise with your senators.

Seattle Indivisible hosts Resist Trump Tuesday informative rallies with live music at the Seattle Federal Building on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month, immediately followed by meetings with Senate staff on the 2nd Tuesday and with House member staff on the 4th Tuesday. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend—please join us, we need your voice!
