Take a moment for reflection & recharge your resistance-level energies

Since late 2016 when the outcome of our presidential elections put Donald Trump into office, we have been organizing, we have been calling for civil and political rights to be upheld in our country; we have been demanding justice for international immigrants who have been seeking asylum, and for the protection of immigrant families from intolerance and abuse; we have been speaking out on behalf of the marginalized voices in our communities, including LGBTQ people and minority and Native American people. Not only that, we have spoken out for environmental protection from Big Coal and fossil fuel exploitation, for Native American tribes’ rights to access their sacred heritage sites, and for women’s reproductive rights. We are demanding the enforcement of our Constitution, and for President Trump and his administration to comply with the legality of our Constitution and with the governing structure of our country.

It has been a long road. We might have given up before today. We might have fallen silent, ceased our phone call efforts, silenced our letters and emails.

But we have not.

We have stood together. We have continued to raise our voices in objection to the intolerance that has poured forth again and again from the President Trump and his administration followers. We have denounced the exploitation and inhumanity that Trump has attempted to impose on those who come to our shores for asylum and on our own residents who happen to be non-conforming.

It is in our banding together that our strength has been brought to bear. If it was only one voice raised in protest, if it was just one person who objected to the vile and destructive actions by this administration, we would have failed. Instead we have a bloc of activists and advocates all over the country rising from the cities and from rural areas to demand justice be upheld, and that our country live up to the standards of our laws, of our Constitution, and of the vision our country represents.

On this Memorial Day weekend we are remembering the service of those who have served in our military forces. We are also asking you to take a moment to reflect on your work, together with Seattle Indivisible. If you have called, if you have written an email or text to lawmakers expressing your opinion, if you have marched in the Science or Womxn’s marches, if you have spoken with a neighbor or member of your community to provide consolation and support in these difficult times, please know that you have made a difference. Without our voices the forces of intolerance and rampant self-interest would have won.

This weekend, please take a moment to reflect on your service in our cause together. Consider the difference that you have made as part of our advocacy and resistance effort. Give yourself credit for being involved and engaged. Each of us is human, with human limitations on our energy, and on our ability to respond to injustices. Please consider taking at least one action of self-care this weekend, whether it be talking with a beloved family member or friend, watching a good movie or TV show, enjoying the outdoors and beautiful weather, listening to music, etc. Recharge that well of compassion and vigilance to address injustices! We need to have you with us for the long haul, so please take good care of your emotional and mental health.

Support the Consumers First Act

Today's action is adapted from our friends at 5Calls: https://5calls.org/issue/consumer-first-act-cfpb

Since the beginning of 2017, the Trump Administration has gone to great lengths to gut the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau by dismantling the agency’s fair lending enforcement, siding with predatory payday lenders, and rolling back financial protections for servicemembers.

The Consumers First Act, which passed the House this week, would reverse the Trump Administration’s anti-consumer agenda and return the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to its original mission: protecting American consumers. This would include:

  • Full supervisory and enforcement powers in the Bureau’s fair lending office;

  • Prior interagency agreements that promote effective coordination among governmental offices;

  • Adequate CFPB staffing in its enforcement and supervisory positions to effectively hold predatory lenders accountable; and

  • Create a dedicated CFPB student loan office.

Today's Action: Show your support for the Consumers First Act

Today, we're asking you to make three calls: the first two are to our Senators to ask them to use their power to push for a floor vote for this bill in the Senate, and the third is to your Representative thanking them for voting in favor of this bill.

Action 1: Call your Senators

Call:

  • Sen. Patty Murray: DC 202-224-2621; Seattle 206-553-5545

  • Sen. Maria Cantwell: DC 202-224-3441; Seattle 206-220-6400

Sample Script:

"Hi, my name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP}. On Wednesday, the House passed the Consumers First Act, which will reverse the Trump Administration’s anti-consumer agenda and help restore the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Will {SENATOR} speak out in favor of this bill?"

Action 2: Call your Representative

Call your Rep:

  • Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

  • Rep. Adam Smith: DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Sample Script:

"Hi, my name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP}. I want to thank {REPRESENTATIVE} for voting for the Consumers First Act, and demonstrating their support for reversing the Trump Administration’s anti-consumer agenda."

Stop Trump from stealing from the military to build his wall

On May 15 Adam Smith, along with other House Armed Services Committee (HASC) Democrats, introduced a bill that would limit Trump’s ability to take money out of military construction funds to build his wall. The bill prevents executive overreach by capping national emergency military construction authority at $250 million per emergency, and reinforcing other restrictions on using the military construction budget as a personal piggy bank.

Congress has voted and already allotted $1.2 million to border security that does not include Trump’s wall - Adam Smith’s bill would help prevent Trump from finding a loophole and finding the funding anyway. Let’s call Adam Smith to thank him, and ask our Senators to introduce a companion bill in the Senate.

ACTION: Stop Trump from stealing from the military to build his wall

Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

Trump should not be allowed to divert money from necessary projects in order to fund a vanity project that is not supported by Congress or the American people. I’d like to thank Rep. Smith for introducing it.”

Begin Impeachment Inquiry Now

Official Daily Action for Wednesday May 21, 2019

Yesterday, our own Representative Pramila Jayapal, member of the House Judicial Committee and Co-Chair of the House Progressive Caucus, came out in favor of beginning an impeachment inquiry against President Trump. Our action today is to thank her for that, and ask her for specific action toward implementing that, such as co-sponsoring Rep. Tlaib's H.Res.257, "Inquiring whether the House of Representatives should impeach Donald John Trump, President of the United States of America." We'll also be asking Representative Adam Smith to join her in working towards impeachment.

Speak Out Against Tariffs on Behalf of Washington Farmers

Trump’s arbitrary tariffs have done serious damage to Washington State farmers and to farmers all over the U.S. Last week the Seattle Times reported that tariffs imposed by the Trump administration have disrupted stable trade agreements between farmers and overseas markets. Those buyers don’t want to go elsewhere, but under tariff restrictions, they do; worse, it's difficult for buyers to return even if tariffs are dropped later because they've had to invest significantly in logistics for new trading arrangements.

Farming is one of the most difficult occupations, physically and financially. Farm yields are subject to the uncertainties of weather, price fluctuations, and other natural and man-made influences. We can’t afford to allow the Trump administration to bring down our Washington State economy and further finanacial hardships for farmers here in Washington and in other states across the U.S.

Last year sales of frozen potatoes to Mexico were cut by more than 25% due to newly imposed tariffs. China, a huge importer of Washington State crops, is expected to drop their purchases dramatically if new Trump-imposed tariffs go into place.

Farmers deserve relief from these incredibly disruptive actions. Trump has attempted to patch over the destruction with farm aid proposals, but not even Republicans are swallowing the bait. Concerned about the 2020 election, Republican lawmakers are starting to press Trump to repeal tariffs.

Please help us raise this issue with our lawmakers and call for repeal of arbitrary and punitive tariffs, to protect American farmers.

ACTION: Call lawmakers and tell them to fight back against tariffs to protect Washington State farmers.

  • Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC - 202-225-3106 Seattle - 206-674-0040

  • Rep. Adam Smith: DC - 202-225-8901 Renton - 425-793-5180

  • Senator Patty Murray: DC - 202-224-2621 Seattle - 206-553-5545

  • Senator Maria Cantwell: DC - 202-224-3441 Seattle - 206-220-6400

SCRIPT:

“Hello, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I have read that Trump’s tariffs are disrupting trade agreements and penalizing farmers who depend on those agreements to make a living. I am outraged at the destruction that Trump’s tariffs has wreaked on farmers’ livelihood. We need to support U.S. farm families. Please continue to call for repeal of Trump tariffs and a return to productive and sound trade agreements. Thank you.“

Oppose Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela!

Venezuela’s fall is the single largest economic collapse outside of war in at least 45 years, economists say. Why is the only solution being discussed seriously a US military intervention? Of course, we want to help the Venezuelan people, but will a US military strike help anyone?

The reality is that there is no U.S. military solution to the crisis in Venezuela, and it would only bring more chaos and suffering to the Venezuelan people who are struggling under a grave economic and food crisis. We trust the Venezuelan people to determine their leadership without US intervention.

Rep. Adam Smith chairs the powerful House Armed Services Committee We want his support for HR 1004, the Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act, introduced by Rep. Cicciline of Rhode Island. The bill would prevent funding from being appropriated in the event of an unauthorized U.S. military intervention in Venezuela, and was recently reported favorably out of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

House opposition to U.S. military intervention could not come at a more urgent time. President Trump and his advisors have continued to reiterate that “all options are on the table” for Venezuela, with Trump reportedly claiming early in his presidency that Venezuela is the “country we should be going to war with. They have all that oil and they’re right on our back door.”

Rep. Jayapal is already a Cosponsor.

ACTION: Thank Rep. Jayapal & Ask Rep. Smith to lead!

"Hi, my name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP}. I would like to urge Rep. Smith to support H.R. 1004, the Prohibiting Unauthorized Military Action in Venezuela Act. This legislation is sitting before the Armed Services Committee, after receiving favorable mark-up in the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The Trump administration has continuously stated that they are willing to consider military intervention in Venezuela, which would only further suffering for the Venezuelan people. We urge you to co-sponsor this bill and support a clean mark-up in your committee as soon as possible to send the message that the Trump administration does not have the authority to take us to war in Venezuela without Congress's approval.”

Sample Script for Rep. Jayapal:

"Hi, my name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP}. I'm calling to thank Rep. Jayapal for Cosponsoring HR 1004 preventing unauthorized military action in Venezuela. There is no U.S. military solution to Venezuela."

Protect American Consumers from Rising Drug Prices

Today’s Daily Action is borrowed from 5Calls.org, an all-volunteer, open-source project that provides targeted, detailed information on critical issues facing our country. 5Calls provides information and sample scripts that you can use to make your voice heard by our elected representatives. 5Calls.org’s effort is intended to make advocacy accessible and to “make it effortless for regular people to have a voice when it’s needed most.” (https://5calls.org/about/)

Against the background of Trump’s continued and multi-faceted attacks on affordable health care for all Americans, Congress is working on legislation to address critical price increases of prescription drugs by pharmaceutical companies and to shore up protection for affordable health care. Last week the House passed H.R. 987, the Strengthening Health Care and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act. In the Senate, two bills have been introduced for similar purposes: S. 62 (Empowering Medicare Seniors to Negotiate Drug Prices Act of 2019) and S. 102 (Prescription Drug Price Relief Act of 2019).

From 5Calls.org:

“Rising prescription drug costs continue to threaten U.S. residents’ physical and financial health, leaving millions of Americans unable to afford essential medications. Nevertheless, pharmaceutical companies have continued to increase prices on critical drugs like insulin. Despite Donald Trump’s vocal campaign promises to limit prescription spending, his administration’s proposed approach does nothing to curb pharmaceutical companies’ ability to set astronomical drug prices. Democrats in the House and Senate have introduced a number of bills designed to meaningfully decrease prescription costs, some of which have bipartisan support from Republicans. A few key proposals from these bills include:

  • Accelerating the process to bring generic drugs to market

  • Limiting consumers’ out-of-pocket spending

  • Allowing consumers to buy lower-priced medications from Canada, in turn driving down prices for US drugs due to increased competition

  • Allowing Medicare to negotiate directly with drug makers to increase transparency and lower prices

  • Requiring brand name drugs to lower excessive prices or face direct competition from generic drugs

As these bills are introduced and considered, constituents must urge their representatives to support legislation to substantively control prescription drug costs.”

ACTION: Email MOCs to express support for H.R. 987, S.62, S.102.

Using email contacts below, send your message of support on this important issue. Feel free to include one or more of your concerns from the list above, or to describe a personal story of escalating prescription drug costs. It is also fine to call MOC offices and leave voicemail instead, if desired; in your message mention your name and city/zip so that staff can identify you when they log the call.

SCRIPT/SUGGESTED THOUGHTS:

“Hello, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am very concerned about affordable health care, and about drug companies increasing prices. [Your reason here.] I am in support of H.R.987/S.62/S102), legislation that addresses runaway drug prices. Thank you.“

Support Access to Abortion Clinics

Georgia, Alabama, and now Missouri - these are just some of the states that are pushing extremist abortion bans through state legislatures these past weeks. Many are extreme by design in order to provoke a favorable Supreme Court battle, but access to reproductive care in these states has already been in decline for years - particularly in poor and marginalized communities that are getting farther from the nearest clinic.

Action: Donate to support clinic access, and share the link

The National Network of Abortion funds provides access and financial and logistical support to women seeking abortions in states where conservatives have made life difficult and dangerous. They support a nationwide network of clinics on the front lines, and have put together an ActBlue fund to support these states most recently affected:

Please DONATE if you are able, and SHARE the link with friends if you can't. It's time to be loud in our support for women's rights.

Stop Trump's 'Blitz' Operation to Arrest Thousands

On Monday, the Washington Post revealed that Kirstjen Nielsen, the now-former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary who oversaw the Trump administration's policies around family separation and putting kids into cages, was forced to resign in part because she had "challenged a secret White House plan to arrest thousands of parents and children in a blitz operation against migrants in 10 major U.S. cities."

Before you start feeling any sympathy for Nielsen, the Washington Post revealed that Nielsen's concerns were "mostly operational and logistical and not as a result of ethical concerns about arresting families."

Of course, the Trump administration won't give up on a plan to inflict even more cruelty upon families simply because that plan is operationally and logistically flawed. This means that we need to convince our members of Congress to start raising questions about the existence of this program now before it is implemented.

Today's Action: Tell Congress to Investigate Trump's Plan for Mass Family Arrests

Call both Senators:

  • Senator Patty Murray: DC 202-224-2621; Seattle 206-553-5545

No Permanent Judgeship for Wendy Vitter

Today the Senate will vote on whether to confirm Wendy Vitter to a permanent judgeship on the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Vitter is a hard-right ideologue who, if given the power of a lifetime appointment, will threaten the rights of women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community.

She has refused to acknowledge that the decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which started the desegregation of schools, was correct. She has given speeches against abortion and contraception. No War with Iran

Official Daily Action for Wednesday May 15, 2019

Donald Trump and his war cabinet seem to be itching for a new war with Iran. First, the Trump administration exited the Iran nuclear deal. Then, they mounted an Iraq War-style PR campaign to prime the public. Now, they’re trying to provoke a reaction from Iran.

For those who recall the lead-in to the Iraq War, this all probably feels pretty familiar. But history must not repeat itself. It’s essential that Congress use its powers to stop this march to war.

Action: Call your Members of Congress and ask them to stop Trump from starting a war with Iran

  • Senator Patty Murray: DC 202-224-2621; Seattle 206-553-5545

  • Senator Maria Cantwell: DC 202-224-3441; Seattle 206-220-6400

  • Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

  • Rep. Adam Smith: DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Script

“Hello, I’m [name] from [city, zip]. I’m very concerned about the possibility of a new war with Iran.

Trump foolishly violated the nuclear deal and put it in danger of falling apart, even though Iran was complying and it was keeping us all safer. Now National Security Adviser John Bolton and the war cabinet are escalating tensions. It feels a lot like the lead-up to the Iraq War.

Will [Rep/Senator] co-sponsor [H.R. 2454/S.1039] and issue a public statement urging diplomacy, not war with Iran? “

Bonus Action

Yesterday, Alabama passed a bill that will outlaw almost all abortions, and punish women and doctors with long prison sentences. It even punishes people who help women go to another state for an abortion. The governor is widely expected to sign it.

If you are able, please make a donation to help with the legal fight against this dangerous law.

Investigate Trump & Giuliani's Abuses of Power

We continue to be alarmed by Trumpworld's efforts to use the power of the federal government to punish their political enemies. Last week, we learned that Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani intended to travel to Ukraine to pressure their government to open an investigation into Joe Biden, Democratic presidential hopeful. We then learned that Trump also wants Attorney General William Barr to open an investigation into Biden.

We know where this road leads: in fake elections in dictatorships like Russia and Turkey, ruling parties investigate and jail their political opponents in order to damage them or disqualify them from the ballot.

Action: Ask your representatives to condemn and investigate the actions of Trump and Giuliani.

Call both Senators:

* Senator Patty Murray: DC - 202-224-2621 Seattle - 206-553-5545

* Senator Maria Cantwell: DC - 202-224-3441 Seattle - 206-220-6400

Call your Representative:

* Rep. Pramila Jayapal--DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

* Rep. Adam Smith--DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Sample Script:

"Hi, my name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP} to ask {MoC} to condemn the efforts of Trump and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani to open politically motivated investigations into Joe Biden. Please call for an investigation into their actions. There needs to be consequences for using the government to go after your political opponents, as it erodes our democracy."

Today is Resist Trump Tuesday!

https://www.facebook.com/events/596391747518411/

Venezuela is going through a complicated moment right now. Join us this week as former Jayapal staffer Sarah Brady breaks it down.

We will rally outside the Federal Bldg. with live music and our guest speaker from 11:45AM - 12:30PM, then we will go inside and meet with Sen. Murray's and Sen. Cantwell's staff from 12:30-1:30PM for a question and answer session as we do on the second Tuesday of every month. Come join us--all are welcome and we need your voice!

Tell our MoCs it’s time to think outside of the box!

In a major escalation, President Trump claimed executive privilege over the entire Mueller Report to keep it from Congress. Also, and this is the short version, President Trump has ordered all parties not to cooperate with any ongoing congressional investigations and the White House will not supply any of the documents subpoenaed by various House Committee Chairs. AG Barr has proven he is loyal to Trump, not the American people. This prompted Chairman Nadler to declare that we’re in a constitutional crisis and Speaker Pelosi to agree.

Trump and his allies are blocking more than 20 separate Democratic probes in an all out war with Congress. No President can just declare themselves off limits to congressional oversight, yet here we are.

So…what now?

Hold Attorney General Barr in …… Inherent Contempt!

Just because it’s been about a century since Congress used this power doesn’t mean now isn’t the perfect time. On multiple occasions, the Supreme Court has affirmed that Congress has the inherent right to enforce its rules, and even imprison people either to compel action or as penalty. The Judiciary Committee requested, then subpoenaed the Mueller Report. When the House votes to find AG Barr in Contempt of Congress, that in and of itself, just makes a statement. In unprecedented times, we don’t need a statement. We need action.

When the House votes to hold the AG in contempt, Congress should use its inherent power to have AG Barr arrested and jailed until he produces the full, unredacted Mueller report, including all underlying evidence, as was lawfully subpoenaed. Seem extreme? It is, however, Trump’s extreme escalation requires a response. This is absolutely within the legal power of congress AND perhaps the best way to get the report!

ACTION: Tell our MoCs to USE EVERY TOOL!

Please Call:

• Senator Patty Murray: DC - 202-224-2621 Seattle - 206-553-5545

• Senator Maria Cantwell: DC - 202-224-3441 Seattle - 206-220-6400

• Rep. Pramila Jayapal--DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

• Rep. Adam Smith--DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Sample Script:

"Hi, my name is [NAME], and I'm calling from [CITY, ZIP]. I’m calling to express my concern over the appalling power grab President Trump is attempting. Please tell [MoC] that they cannot let this stand, or we risk changing the country forever. Congress is a co-equal branch of government and has a constitutional duty to check the Executive. We need to see the full Mueller report. If congress does vote to hold AG Barr in contempt, I support congress using its inherent contempt powers to jail the AG until he produces the report.”

Stand up for Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Land Trust

This week the House of Representatives passed a bill that would preserve a land trust for a Massachusetts Tribe, the Mashpee Wampanoag. This bipartisan bill, H.R. 312, has progressed to the Senate for approval. The bill would preserve the tribe’s right to control 312 acres of land, rights that were protected by the Obama Administration in 2015.

From a statement by the tribe:

“The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe’s citizens are currently suffering a massive loss of resources and services due to the uncertainty of the trust status of the Reservation. Millions of dollars of funding are being lost or delayed for our clean water program, our children’s education through our Mukayuhsak Weekuw immersion pre-school and kindergarten and critical community service programs. It’s also a direct threat to our emergency services, housing and substance abuse program that’s desperately needed to combat the opioid epidemic. These are just a few of the ways this negative ruling is impacting our community and our children. Please consider ways that you can help correct this injustice.“

Trump and the Dept. of the Interior have recently moved to nullify the tribe’s rights. In response, House lawmakers from both sides of the aisle drafted and passed H.R. 312 to restore the land trust. H.R. 312 provides continued economic stability and self-governance to the Massachusetts-based tribe who welcomed pilgrims into this country.

ACTION: Tell Senate lawmakers you support H.R. 312, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Reservation Reaffirmation Act.

It’s the weekend, but please call or email Senate lawmakers with this important message of support. You can leave voicemail for lawmakers’ staff to document when they return to offices on Monday. Be sure to include your name and city/zip in your message so they can identify you when you leave a voicemail message. Or you may prefer to email your MOCs; please customize email messages to convey your own thoughts.

SCRIPT/SUGGESTED THOUGHTS:

“Hi, my name is [NAME] and I'm a constituent from [CITY, ZIP]. I am calling to express support for H.R. 312, the Washpee Wampanoag Tribe Reservation Reaffirmation Act. We need to protect the rights of indigenous people in this country, which are under renewed attack by the Trump Administration. Thank you.“

Leave a Comment: Protect 55,000 Children of Undocumented Immigrants Facing Eviction From Public Housing

The Trump Administration continues to be creative in its cruelty towards immigrant communities. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) unveiled a new proposed rule yesterday that would evict about 25,000 immigrant families from public housing.

Under current rules, only one person in a family of mixed immigration status needs to qualify in order for the whole family to live in subsidized housing. In the Trump administration's proposed rule change, a family can only live in public housing if *every* member of their family has eligible immigration status. Advocates and news organizations estimate that this would result in 55,000 children being evicted from their homes, including children who are U.S. citizens.

The consequences for these low-income children are likely to include periods of homelessness, psychologically damaging instability, and increased risk of school truancy and substance abuse.

Please leave a COMMENT against this proposed HUD rule in the federal register:

Ask our Members of Congress to Protect Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions

This action is adapted from the good folks at 5 Calls (https://5calls.org/issue/protecting-americans-preexisting-conditions%20-act)

Last fall, the Trump Administration approved a new rule allowing consumers to use Affordable Care Act tax subsidies to purchase short-term health insurance plans. These substandard plans can charge people with pre-existing conditions higher premiums and aren’t required to cover essential health benefits like maternity, mental health, or hospital services. Healthcare advocates have warned that the proliferation of these junk plans steers healthy people away from the long-term insurance market, which in turn drives up prices for sicker consumers. Short-term plans also put buyers at risk for financial devastation in case of an accident or an illness like cancer; for example, one short-term insurance plan buyer faced $200,000 in bills after their insurer declined to cover the vast majority of their heart surgery costs.

Democrats in the House and Senate have introduced the Protecting Americans with Pre-existing Conditions Act (H.R.986/S.466) to prohibit the use of ACA subsidies to pay for junk plans. Let's call our Members of Congress and ask them to vocally support this legislation.

Today's Action: Ask our MoCs to Support HR.986/S.466

Call both Senators:

  • Senator Patty Murray: DC - 202-224-2621 Seattle - 206-553-5545

  • Senator Maria Cantwell: DC - 202-224-3441 Seattle - 206-220-6400

Call your Representative:

  • Rep. Pramila Jayapal--DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

  • Rep. Adam Smith--DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Sample Script:

"Hi, my name is {NAME}, and I'm calling from {CITY, ZIP} to ask {MoC} to support the Protecting Americans with Pre-existing Conditions Act. I'm concerned about the Trump Administration's attempts to undermine our health care system with junk health insurance plans, and I want to hear how {MoC} is going to help stop them from this attack."

Bonus Action: Washington Mother's Day Call to Action

Here is the update on the plan for a Washington Mother's Day Call To Action. We are requesting your participation and support by blasting out the Facebook page and event and asking your contacts, individuals and organizations to share this with their constituencies, state-wide.

This call to action began as a grass roots campaign started by random people all over the country, who are now reaching out to local and state immigrant rights / immigrant advocacy leaders and groups to unite, to shine the light on family separation and child detention, to encourage people to donate to bond funds this Mother's Day, and to get people to speak with family and friends gathered on Sunday and talk about the inhumanity of the current administration's atrocious policies and their impact on our immigrant brothers and sisters.

Please see their website for further information and terrific resources for families to use:

https://www.mothersdayrally.com

Here in Washington state, we are calling for three actions:

1. Instead of buying a Mother's Day gift, we are calling on every family to donate to the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network Fair Fight Bond Fund.

https://www.facebook.com/Washington-State-Mothers-Day-Action-988552308017852/?modal=admin_todo_tour

We chose this single beneficiary because the Bond Fund is in need, and because it results in the release of mothers to be reunited with their families. We'd like to expand our fund raising efforts to include the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and the NWDCR (La Resistencia) going forward.

2. We are calling for people in the Seattle area to support the Seattle Democratic Socialists event on Mother's Day, Sunday night May 12th at 5:00, at Optimism Brewing Company, which is also raising funds for the WAISN Fair Fight Bond Fund and seeks to educate about immigration.

https://www.facebook.com/events/997143367156735/

3. We are calling on Washingtonians to speak up and bring up this administration's policies which are harming families and children by separation and detention, and talk about these issues with their families, neighbors, communities. We want to inspire people to keep the spotlight on the separations until these policies are changed.

Here's the event link:

After Mother's Day, we will encourage more action through support of our immigrant leaders and communities, who are already planning a series of events and campaigns, to keep the heat on.

Protect Immigrants: Pass a Strong Dream and Promise Act

The Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6, would provide permanent relief to Dreamers, individuals with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders. All of these groups are currently at risk under the Trump Administration of being deported and separated from their families, even though many have lived in America for decades. H.R. 6 would protect them permanently.

Republicans want to water this bill down by narrowing the rules for who is eligible, and had scheduled a time for “mark up” yesterday, but this was postponed thanks to the protests of Democrats who do not want to see it diluted. The longer a vote on this bill is delayed, the more risk we run of it dying in committee or getting diluted before passing. We've already called on this last month, but time is running out on this important bill.

ACTION: Tell your Reps to Pass a Strong H.R. 6

Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

Dreamers, TPS holders, and DED holders all deserved permanent relief from the threat of deportation – many of these people have lived and worked in America their entire lives. We must do what we can to protect as many of them as we can.”

Tell Congress to Hold Barr in Contempt

CNN reported on Monday: "House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler has scheduled a Wednesday vote to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress after the Justice Department declined to provide an unredacted version of the Mueller report to Congress."

We think it is vital that Congress reminds Bill Barr that he is the Attorney General for the people of the United States, and not for this corrupt President and White House, and so today we are going to call to urge our Representatives to vote in favor of the contempt resolution.

Depending on when you call, the House Judiciary Committee may have already voted on its contempt resolution. Regardless of the status of the committee vote, it is crucial that our Representatives know that we want them to vote in favor of this resolution on the House floor.

Today's Action: Congress Must Find Barr in Contempt

Call your Representative:

  • Rep. Pramila Jayapal: DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

  • Rep. Adam Smith: DC 202-225-8901; Renton 425-793-5180

Sample Script:

Tell your Representative: #DefundHate

The White House has asked for an additional $4.5 billion in "emergency" border funding, including over $1 billion to the Department of Homeland Security. This is money that will go straight to Trump's deportation machine.

We didn't elect a Democratic majority to help fund ICE and CBP. They need to use their power to cut this funding. It should be reduced to at least the funding levels from the Obama administration (FY16).

Representative Jayapal, along with Representative Torres and Representative Chu, have been circulating a "Dear Colleague" letter asking the House Appropriations Committee to decline this funding request. Ask Representative Smith to sign on to this letter.

Hold Attorney General Barr Accountable!

The Attorney General lied to the American people and he lied to Congress. He lied about the Mueller Report, by stating that the report exonerated Trump from allegations of obstruction, despite the fact that the report was damning. Not only did AG Barr lie about Mueller’s work, he also won’t let Congress have access to it. Barr has ignored a lawful subpoena issued by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Nadler, on behalf of the Judiciary Committee. Representative Jayapal also serves on that committee.

After Barr ignored the subpoena from the House Judiciary, Chairman Nadler sent AG Barr a counter offer to his subpoena in a good faith effort to negotiate.

The deadline for Barr's response is today, Monday May 6, at 9am.

The letter, sent to Barr on Friday states “the Committee remains willing to negotiate a reasonable accommodation with the Department” and suggested that the department “prioritize a specific, defined set of underlying investigative and evidentiary materials for immediate production.” Nadler does ask Barr to reconsider his refusal to let members of Congress view the redacted grand jury material in the report.

“The committee is prepared to make every realistic effort to reach an accommodation with the department,” Nadler wrote. “But if the department persists in its baseless refusal to comply with a validly issued subpoena, the committee will move to contempt proceedings and seek further legal recourse.”

Rep. Jayapal is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and she is bold when necessary. If the Attorney General is to be held to account, it starts in the Judiciary Committee.

Unless Rep. Jayapal is currently reading the full, unredacted, Mueller Report today we need her to be bold again right now!

ACTION: Let Rep. Jayapal know we support holding AG Barr accountable!

Rep. Pramila Jayapal--DC 202-225-3106; Seattle 206-674-0040

Script:

“Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [PLACE]. I’m calling to let you know I support Rep. Jayapal’s pursuit of the full, unredacted, Mueller report. We can’t trust AG Barr, and we have no way of knowing what is redacted. I also support holding AG Barr accountable for his crime of lying to congress in whatever form will make the most sense to acquire Mueller's report. I support holding AG Barr in Contempt of Congress. I support impeachment of AG Barr.”
