Resist Trump Tuesday-PRIDE & JUSTICE

Join us this Tuesday as we rally in support of our LGBTQIA+ friends and neighbors who are under attack by the Trump administration.

Featured Speakers: Monserrat Padilla (WAISN, SOMO, Gender Justice League); Ebony Miranda (Black Lives Matter)

Hate crimes have spiked since Trump was elected—with trans womxn of color being the #1 target. Patriotic transgender soldiers are fighting just to be “allowed” to continue to put their lives on the line for the rest of us. And this administration is seeking to legally define “gender” so as to erase transgender folx all together, along with their access to health, education, legal protection against discrimination and social services.

As PRIDE month comes to a close, learn why there’s a dedicated Trans Pride rally and march on 6/28 and why we all need to stand up to the hatred being spewed from Washington D.C., as well as the threats transgender and other LGBTQIA folx feel right here in Seattle.

Come rally at the Federal Building from 11:45AM-12:20PM, where there'll be live music and directly impacted leaders on the front lines of this fight for justice, including featured speaker Monserrat Padilla. Then join us as we meet at the SEIU 775 building with Pramila Jayapal’s and Adam Smith’s congressional staffers from 12:30-1:30PM. We need your voice!

“It is our duty to fight for our freedom.

It is our duty to win.

We must love each other and support each other.

We have nothing to lose but our chains.”

Resist Trump Tuesday--Trump's Abuse of Emergency Powers

RESIST TRUMP TUESDAY FOCUSES ON TRUMP’S ABUSE OF PRESIDENTIAL EMERGENCY POWER

Join us for this week’s Resist Trump Tuesday where we will discuss Trump’s abuse of presidential emergency powers. In just the past 6 months, Trump has created fake “emergencies” to grab power from Congress to:

·         Deploy our military to the Mexican border

·         Redirect funding from real emergencies to border wall

·         Sell arms to Saudi Arabia

·         Threaten Mexico with tariffs

This unfettered abuse of emergency power threatens our democracy and endangers the globe. Come learn more about it, and how you can help stop this rise of authoritarianism.

We rally at the Seattle Federal Building from 11:45am-12:30pm, immediately followed by a meeting with Senator Murray’s and Senator Cantwell’s staff from 12:30-1:30pm. All are welcome.

Come join us. We need your voice!

On the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month, we meet from 7-9 PM to discuss what actions Seattle Indivisible is and should be taking to defeat the Trump agenda. Our featured speaker at our Resist Trump Tuesday rally this week is Aneelah Afzali of MAPS-AMEN. Aneelah will be talking about the No Ban Act that is being introduced in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives on April 10th.

For two years, the Muslim Travel Ban has deeply and adversely affected individuals and communities, tearing apart families. After the U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing the latest version of the Muslim Ban, it's up to Congress to repeal the Muslim Ban and create new standards to stop such discriminatory bans in the future.

Join us this Tuesday to learn the real pain caused by the 35-day government shutdown that Trump threatens to repeat in 3 weeks. Our featured speakers will include the President of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1121 and a representative of the Washington Dream Coalition and others directly impacted. We will also discuss proposed legislation to outlaw the use of government shutdowns for political leverage.

Seattle Womxn Marching Forward, in collaboration with frontline communities, and guided by the work of those who went before us, is thrilled to announce the year's biggest weekend of action, advocacy, and activism: the anniversary of the Womxn's March on Seattle and the events honoring Martin Luther King Jr.

The format, activities, and themes for this year’s anniversary weekend were conceived of by a core programming team of diverse frontline activists that represent communities and organizations with long histories of social justice action and movement work. The womxn who helped build this weekend's program bring deep experience, leadership, and perspective to the most pressing issues in our region. Seattle Womxn Marching Forward is actively collaborating with MLK Day organizers to co-create a weekend of events that helps realize a future of thriving and justice for all.

Together, as we work for a world that benefits everyone, we present Womxn’s March 2019: BUILDING POWER.

On SATURDAY, January 19, we kick off a weekend of building power through community, protest, and activism with a rally. Hear from the region’s most powerful progressive womxn leaders as they speak about the greatest threats and most inspiring triumphs our communities have experienced in the past year.

After the rally, we will march to Seattle Center, where we continue our day of service and learning. At Seattle Center, attend one of several "Activism 101" workshops designed to energize, illuminate, and activate our marchers for the work to come in 2019 and beyond.

ON SUNDAY, January 20, we build power through connection at the second annual Womxn Act on Seattle: a full day of food and supply drives, workshops, lectures, trainings, small groups, panel discussions and community-building events at Hubs and independent locations all around the region. Last year, we organized nearly 100 events, registered 100s of people to vote, and collected ONE TON of food for Food Lifeline. Let's make this year even better.

ON MONDAY, January 21, we build power by honoring the 14th annual Martin Luther King Jr. march and day of service. Join the Womxn’s March coalition at the MLK Jr. Day justice-oriented workshops and the 37th annual MLK Jr. Day march as a show of solidarity that no one is free until everyone is free.

“Whose House? Our House!”

WA-state Indivisible groups in CDs 7 and 9 are joining other Indivisible groups across the state and country in a nationwide Day of Action on Thursday, January 3, 2019.  On the first day of this newly Blue Congress, Indivisibles will be the first to hear their representatives' new agenda as their staffers address us at the rally, then we will host an in-depth question and answer listening session where you will have a chance to ask representative staffers direct questions. Indivisibles are turning out in Congressional Districts throughout the nation to say here we are, and we are taking out seat at the table.

Sign up for both the Rally and the Meeting on the National Indivisible Events Page:

10:45 Rally w/ Rep. Jayapal's & Rep. Smith's Staff – Henry M Jackson Federal Building – 915 2nd Ave, Seattle, WA  https://act.indivisible.org/event/local-actions/135834/signup

 11:45 Extended Q&A w/ Rep. Jayapal & Rep. Smith Staffers  – SEIU 775 offices – 215 Columbia St, Seattle, WA https://act.indivisible.org/event/local-actions/135835/signup

Seattle Indivisible, Indivisible Eastside, Wallingford Indivisible, Indivisible Renton and Indivisible Kirkland will be meeting with congressional staff. Our focus will be on the critical "First 100 Days of Congress," during which the agenda priorities for the next two years will be set. We intend to be there to bring our collective influence to our Members of Congress and to hold them accountable for driving the progressive values and actions that were the basis of our Blue Wave.

From the Indivisible.org Jan 3 Day of Action explainer and toolkit:

“We expect the first major legislative effort in a Democratically-controlled House to be a democracy reform effort (H.R. 1). This legislation is expected to strengthen everyone’s right to vote and to have their vote count, to stem the tide of big money in politics, and to root out corruption at all levels of government—including the White House. The election of Donald Trump (and the first two years of his administration) has brought into sharp focus the importance of preserving and protecting our democracy against blatant attempts to erode it. While Trump and his GOP enablers suppress the vote, profit off of corruption and attack essential democratic norms, Democrats now have an opportunity to change course. They must prioritize undoing that damage, and creating institutions in which we are all represented, included, and protected.

It is critical that we are loud, coordinated and powerful on January 3rd to make sure that this democracy package is as progressive as possible.”

Families For Families Children's March

SEE BELOW FOR SPANISH / ABAJO PARA ESPANOL

Families for Families: A Children-led March to demand justice for all Immigrant Families!

Families are still being separated by cruel immigration policies, and children are still being locked in cages! Regulations such as the public charge rule are further curtailing the rights of immigrants. While national attention has turned away from these abuses happening in our country, violations of human dignity and rights continue. The Freedom for Immigrants Campaign (Families Belong Together WA coalition) believes it's time for us to continue to raise awareness, advocate for justice, and demand an end to the separation and detention of immigrant families!

Together we demand justice for all immigrants. Together we stand with our children as they lift their voices of resistance against the unjust detention of their peers and their parents. Together we say that families belong together, not detained. Gather with us on Sunday, October 28th at 2:00 pm at Centro de la Raza Centilia Center to add your hands, feet, and voices with family members of all ages and generations as we seek #FreedomForImmigrants and stand #Families4Families!

*** ESPANOL

Our Causes Are Connected And We Need A Choir Of Progressive Voices

At our rally this Tuesday, we will discuss where we go from here in the aftermath of the Kavanaugh confirmation vote. Tae Phoenix will not only share her inspiring music at the rally, but will also speak about her experiences participating in the Kavanaugh confirmation battle in Washington D.C. We will discuss lessons learned and how we translate this energy into meaningful electoral change.

In our continuing work in coalition with Families Belong Together and a number of immigrant rights organizations, we also will welcome a speaker to educate us on the latest effort by the Trump Admin to penalize immigrants for using needed public services under the new “Public Charge” rule.

Efforts to marginalize, exclude and silence women, minorities and immigrants are all interrelated, and recent events only underscore why we all need to continue to stand up for one another and mobilize together to make our voices heard in the midterm elections.

Gold Star father and Army veteran Joe Colgan started what is referred to informally as "The Downtown Peace Vigil". Joe lost his son Lt. Ben Colgan, in Baghdad, Iraq, November 1, 2003. In 2006, Joe started the vigil. Every Tuesday from 11am to 1pm Joe and a group of volunteers set up in front of the Federal Building talking to people about the virtues of pacifism and the dangers of the military industrial complex. They collect postcards every week and deliver them to the offices of both Senators Murray and Cantwell. Once a month Vets4Peace joins them to show support.

Seeing Joe there every week has been inspirational as he set an example of persistence through adversity.

This coming Tuesday will be Joe's last Vigil and we're looking to honor him!

ATTN: There will be no staff meeting this week, but please show up and honor someone who really deserves it.

Endeavour Capital: Respect Our Rights, Say No to Hate!

About: Endeavour Capital is a Pacific Northwest-based private equity firm with an office in downtown Seattle. One of their repeat limited partner investors is the Murdock Charitable Trust, which has given millions of dollars to extremist groups that campaign against LGBTQI rights, promote “gay conversion therapy,” provide false medical information to women seeking reproductive health services, and use aggressive and misleading tactics to undermine public employee unions. Endeavour also invests in companies like Aladdin Bail Bonds, which profits from our unjust cash bail system, and New Seasons, which called in union busting consultants to intimidate their employees in Portland.

Join Seattle Indivisible, women’s organizations, LGBTQI activists, and workers as we demand that Endeavour Capital and their portfolio companies respect our rights and stop enriching the Murdock Charitable Trust.

More information:

The Murdock Trust has donated $975,000 to the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF)
The ADF defends LGBTQ conversion therapy
The ADF fights against marriage equality
The ADF promotes anti-transgender discrimination bills nationally, including the “bathroom bills”
The ADF represents plaintiffs like Masterpiece Cakeshop - arguing for legalized discrimination against LGBTQ customers

The Murdock Trust has donated $1,547,200 to fund “pregnancy crisis centers”
These centers pose as legitimate medical or counseling clinics, but exist to prevent women from accessing abortion services
NARAL Pro-Choice America has asked for the boycott and defunding of these clinics

The Murdock Trust has donated $765,000 to the Freedom Foundation
The Freedom Foundation seeks to eliminate paid sick leave and opposes minimum wage increases for low-wage workers.
The Freedom Foundation staff publicly opposed the Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage arguing that it is a “threat to personal freedom.”
The Freedom Foundation quotes in their blog “doom-and-gloom scenarios about climate change are based on a combination of political agendas and junk science.”
The Freedom Foundation’s staff consistently attacks Planned Parenthood, calling them a “radical social organization” and a “baby killing, body-part brokering, government money consuming machine.

Phone Bank Into Alaska To Pressure Sen. Murkowski's SCOTUS Vote

WONDERING WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAKE SURE TRUMP DOES NOT GET A SUPREME COURT PICK TO OVERTURN ABORTION RIGHTS?

This week at our regular weekly meeting, Seattle Indivisible is hosting a phone bank into Alaska trying to persuade Alaska voters to ask Sen. Murkowski (R-AK) to vote against Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court. The goal is to call Alaska voters, patch them through to Senator Murkowski’s office, and have them leave a message asking her to block any SCOTUS nominee who doesn’t support Roe v Wade.  Training will be provided!

PLEASE BRING A FULLY CHARGED LAPTOP (OR TABLET) AND CELL PHONE. The phone calls into Alaska are routed through an online service you access on your computer to your cell phone. It’s easy--training only takes 5 minutes. If you don’t have a laptop or tablet to bring, let us know and we’ll arrange for extras.

We need an approximate count of how many will be attending, so please RSVP by clicking “going” on this Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/276842793124202/?ti=icl

We need your help! Thanks.
